if the world should stop revolving
Nov. 8th, 2021 10:30 pmI made Millionaire's Shortbread this week, both regular and GF versions to take to my all-day chorus rehearsal today. Where it went down many appreciative throats, although we have brought quite a few chunks of it back with us. I'm not generally a big shortbread fan, but I have to admit that the home made kind is pretty good, and when topped with caramel and chocolate, it is excellent.

Rewatched The Mandalorian with Boy, and found to my pleasure and surprise that the story was much more interesting and better told than I remembered. Also, 'tis a crime to hide that face.
We have also been watching the Marvel What If series about possible alternate timelines, which meh. Mostly, I think very poorly of them. What If T'Challa became 'Star Lord' instead of douchey Peter? Who cares—it was a very flimsy set-up and I think we can all tell that there is a difference in the moral character between those two, so, why bother? I had thought zombie!Captain America might be fun, but, meh again. Many of the episodes seem simply to be a string of boring fights.
The first of the series, in which Peggy Carter gets the serum instead of Steve Rogers, was at least a plausible set-up. But they didn't really follow through with what an over-sized female superhero would have had to deal with in the 1940s, which would have been plenty! I suspect everyone would have been complaining that she was completely pointless—not even worth putting in a fund-raising entertainment tour, because who'd want to see a big, strong woman? But there wasn't a lot of time spent on that, and the episode more or less translated the action of Captain America: The First Avenger into Peggy's story, even down to having her wake up from an ice bath seventy years on.
I think it would have been more interesting to go with General Wossname's choice, and give the serum to a brutish bully instead, and see where that led. It was always clear that it was what was in Steve Rogers' heart and mind rather than in his physique that made him a hero, but I would say that making that pellucid by putting someone unpleasant into the role instead might have been worth exploring. What if Captain America was actually selfish, a bully and a bit of a coward?
The best, so far, is (somewhat to my surprise) 'what if Killmonger saved Tony Stark in Afghanistan'. It reminded me of Killmonger's military background, and kept the characters in character pretty well. All rather horrifying, but well thought through and a very plausible alternate timeline for the MCU.
I'm not sure that I care whether all the threads of alternate universes are about to be brought together (we're almost at the end of the first season), but I suppose if they are, there might be a point?

My shortbread ended up quite chunky, and so was the topping. Not that I'm complaining! But I think the recipes could well be spread over larger baking trays than they were.
