The Last Days of Ptolemy Grey
I've not seen Samuel L Jackson act before. By which I mean, as Nick Fury he makes the character cooler and the character makes him cooler, but it's somehow always "Samuel L Jackson as Nick Fury". That may not be the case in other roles, but I don't think I've seen very many of them. At any rate, here, Samuel L Jackson isn't there, Ptolemy Grey is there. He's brilliant.
It's not a fluffy show. It's funny, here and there, and heartwarming, here and there, and also sad and sometimes sinister. How cruel the young are to the old, shouting with rage when an old, demented man wanders helplessly in front of a car, or trying to steal from someone who doesn't really know what's happening and can be easily denied, or simply partitioning them off into lonely squalor because they are too uncomfortable to acknowledge. I got a lot of insight into what it must have felt like to be my late father in law. And *such* bad vibes from the doctor, shades of generations of white people experimenting on black people. *shudder*
It is excellent. Apple TV is producing some really good stuff.

We also watched Turning Red recently, and enjoyed it enormously. Though I can never be entirely happy with a portrayal of a mother who is so completely and unbearably overwhelming, however well-intentioned she may be. But the panda stuff was a lot of fun, and I was absolutely delighted by the boyband element, particularly when they had a very, koff, in synch presentation and were plainly singing one of Backstreet's lost masterpieces. I think the songwriters must have marinaded themselves in early Backstreet. Great stuff.
