I'd rather be shiny

Beast and I just had a very different evening at the theatre.

It was Bun who told us about it. She and her man bought tickets at the cheaper rate, and I procrastinated as usual but still got us seats at the table. Literally, at the table. It was a show by Curious Directive, called Gastronomic, which involved telling the story of a flight from Tehran to London, with a seven course taster meal served during the performance. The 'fish and chips' was really, really tasty. Most of them were good, but not quite as inspired. Lots of inventiveness in the presentation of both the story and the food, which was sometimes delivered by the 'airline chefs' but sometimes came on a conveyor belt! A presentation that must have been conceived in one amazing collaboration of drama, food and tech.

Day 4: questions about fandom merch. Well, I don't think I have a lot of it. I am very fond of the Nsync puppets, which I dimly remember trading with mickey_m once upon a time. The puppets have occasionally been on outings with me, and generally come to Camp, which is fun. Otherwise, aside from various TNG-related books and Lance's autobiography,which I don't think actually count as 'merch', I don't think I have any.

Day 5: I wouldn't mind being able to go back in time and poke the casting and set-up of Firefly. A travelling escort? Really? We have to go there *and* have Mal treat her as contemptible as a result? She could have been some kind of commercial agent with lots of connections in the Alliance instead. And surely the Tams ought to have been of Chinese origin. I mean, yes, two very pretty people—Summer Glau's skin is amazing—but why the heck were they (and their parents) not cast Chinese?

Good point about the lack of Chinese in the cast.

I was okay with the 'Companion' aspect. Apart from Mal the crew all treated her with respect, and even Mal treated her with more respect then most people today give sex workers. It's something that needs highlighting - why do we treat sex workers so badly as a society?

Gastronomic sounds so cool! I'd love to go to something like that.

I almost said Firefly for day 2, for something that could be rebooted better with a different showrunner. Whedon's politics are revolting but the concept was cool, and could be done better by someone who hates women less and wasn't afraid to actually make the Chinese background matter.

Camp wouldn't be the same without the puppets. They've got up to some fun adventures over the years.
