pensnest: Fashion shot of woman in fabulous hat (Hat hauteur)

I have become very sloppy and erratic about posting. And when Snowflake Challenge was running, I posted essentially nothing for it, mostly because I have nothing new to say about fandom and didn't want to say the same thing again.

So I thought I'd have a go at a few prompts for March, which I have compiled somewhat randomly. Feel free to borrow any that appeal to you!

Today: Hats. Yea?

Oh, hats definitely yea. I am disappointed that more people do not wear more hats more often. One at a time, obviously, but, yea.

My grandma would not go out of the house without a hat on, not even into the back garden. During the run-up to my sister's grand wedding at St Paul's, grandma and I went to the local mad hatter's little shop in a basement along the Old High Street, and had hats custom made for ourselves. Which was very enjoyable, and something I recommend. I still have mine, a magenta one with navy trim and a large lily-esque flower. Not sure I should wear magenta, mind, but it's a fabulous colour.

I wear a hat when I go out, generally speaking. I have several. A black squishy cloth one and its dark red counterpart, and a purple squishy felt one with its soft, dark pink counterpart. I have a crocheted black hat with brown trim which doesn't look like much, and yet twice now, complete strangers have complimented me on it and asked where I got it. (Sadly, I don't remember. If I did, I should go back and get more.)

As well as the magenta and navy wedding hat, I have a black straw hat with splendid feather decoration and a broad brim. Needs a hatpin to secure it. I wore it to my father's funeral, but not since. It would be wrong to wear a hat of such fabulousness to the wedding of someone who is not my own child, I feel (unless I get invited to a royal wedding, I guess), as one should not outshine the Mother of the Bride, and one cannot rely on the MotB getting her fabulous hat-on. (One of the reasons—probably the main reason—why I like watching royal weddings is to see what people wear, and critique the hats, One can rely on there being a reasonable number of hats at a royal wedding.)

I have a large, black, faux-fur hat, which is fun and a bit too flabby to be posh. I have recently acquired a dark beige summer had with a darker lining to the broad brim. I've discovered that the hats for me generally need to have a fairly strong-coloured brim, because a white brim does me no favours at all. I do have a small collection of berets, but they, like the fur hat, are tucked away at the moment while we wait, apparently for ever, for our front door to be finished and thus to re-gain access to the downstairs wardrobe area. Grump. I have a hat habit. I cannot bear to pass a hat stall. I think I shall have to acquire teal and perhaps brown versions of the hat that I already have in pink and purple. Ooh, maybe next weekend! Strong likelihood of hat stall next weekend!

Hats look good on me. So often, people who compliment me on the hat I'm wearing assure me that they do not look good in hats. I do not believe this. I think the difference between looking good in a hat and not looking good in a hat is basically the self-belief that one looks good in hats, or lack of it. Hats are awesome.

Hooray for hats! I am also a big fan of them, although I seem to run out of places to store them.

I always appreciate seeing people in hats, and the confidence it takes to wear them. I suspect your theory is correct, and that many don't feel they can pull them off.

when I was little, I remember getting little hats specially for Easter, and warm knitted ones for winter - but as an adult, I mostly didn't wear them. in collect I found a nice little pillbox in an antique store, found some netting with dark glittery spots and fastened that to it. I'd wear it sometimes, especially with my lovely vintage coat from the 30s, but it always felt more like costume than 'real life' clothing. and my parents brought me a bright red beret from a trip to German in the 80s, which I wore for years, feeling vaguely dashing whenever I did so.

but mostly hats haven't been a thing for most of my life; I tend to wrap big scarves around my head & shoulders in cold weather nowadays, even though I do own a couple knitted caps made by friends

You have to show me that wedding hat. It sounds fabulous and I can't see any reason why you (or anyone else, for that matter) shouldn't wear magenta. Magenta is a wonderful colour!

While I almost always wear a knitted hat in winter I'm not really one for hats when it's not cold. Well, unless it's very sunny, then I wear the sunhat I made last year. And this made me realise that my opinion on hats is pretty much completely based on their usefulness. Of course a hat also has to look nice or I won't wear it, but it's basic function is to protect me from the weather.

Oh yes, royal weddings are excellent occasions for clothes & hat viewing!

Yes, hat shopping!

You do look good on hats! Even in brimless ones such as that colourful fascinator I seem to remember you wearing once at Camp.

It looks like I've completely forgotten to tell you the exact details, oops! My flight will hopefully arrive at Gatwick at 17:35 and then I have a ticket for the 19:16 train for Norwich by way of Cambridge. (There was a train an hour earlier but I didn't want to risk missing it if the flight is delayed.) I'm supposed to arrive in Norwhich at 22:35. So late, but not horribly late, and I hope one of you will be kind enough to pick me up.

See you on Friday!!
