Slightly frustrating, though, in that I wanted the links in the sidebar to be the same colour as the background of the main page, and I can't do that without them disappearing on the main entry. Woe! Is there any way to get links in different places to be different colours, do you know?

Yes there is. The sidebar links have their own set command:
set sidebar_link_color = "#441601";
set sidebar_link_hover = "#FDFAE2"; (that's my current values of course)

You can also play around with the link and link hover colours for almost every part of a layout by changing the different a:link, a:visited, and a:hover values for that part. (As I have done in my layout. You can see the code here.)

Interesting question - I did the graphics for header and background, but simply slipped those into code that turloughishere wrote for me ages ago, and altered the colours accordingly. I'm far too lazy to try to write my own from scratch - it's the kind of information that just slides off my brain.
