Beast has found a tortoise in the garden. It's an active little thing, but we have caged it and given it lettuce and water, and I've been calling local vets and the Norfolk Tortoise Club to see if we can locate an owner. It is peering mournfully through the mesh.

I have no mournful tortoise icon, alas.

Edit: I have taken our shelly visitor to the vet. They will scan him/her (how does one tell?) for possible chip, and if none is found the receptionist, who was very excited to receive the tortoise, will care for it until somehow the owner turns up. I shall keep an eye open for Wanted posters.

An escapee tortoise! I wonder if he was out there feeling the rush of cool air & freedom blow through his ,,, shell as he wandered off to adventure and that’s why he looks sad now? ;) But seriously thank goodness you all found him before he tried to cross a major road or something. Hopefully the owner turns up!

I don't know if it would have made it to the road, but more likely it could have wandered on to the building site next door, which does not seem like a good idea.

Give it a wide variety of greens and veg. The lettuce thing is a bit of a myth.

I've seen tortoises eat things like runner beans with relish.

How big is it?

dandelions, both leaves and flowers are popular as well.

I think if we'd been keeping it longer, we'd have looked up What Tortoises Like, but it has now been taken to the nearest vet for (hopefully) identification, and if not, the care of someone with more enthusiasm for tortoises than I can summon.

Captured! Just when it thought it had reached freedom at last! Though it's probably for the best for it in the long run. What with cars and wildlife and WINTER!

It was not, I feel, a happy tortoise, being caged, but Beast was mowing the lawn, so... and from the amount it shat, I am very glad we didn't let it wander within the house!

It was a sturdy and speedy tortoise, too. And visibly unimpressed with the cage.
